Affording Therapy
Don’t let the cost of therapy deter you from getting the help you need. Here are some ways to be able to afford therapy
- Insurance: Several therapist accept insurance. You can either search for an therapist within your network through your insurance website or use insurance as one of the filters when searching
- Ask for a sliding scale: Many therapists offer a sliding scale, which allows clients to pay a lower fee based on their income.
- Community Mental Health Clinics: These government funded facilities that offer free to low cost counseling services
- Students can get free counseling through their campus counseling center
- Religious homes, like your church, may offer free to low-cost counseling
- Interns at counseling centers, clinics, and training centers may see clients for free of VERY low cost
- Free support groups within your community
If none of these options work for you, consider the following:
- Adjust your budget. See where you can cut costs (eat at home, cancel a subscription, etc.)
- Go to a session two or once a month while keeping up with the self-work in between sessions
- Journal
- Read self-help books and others that cater to your mind and spirit
- Try a mental health app like Calm, Headspace, Expectful, Insight Timer, Smiling Mind, or Aura (there are several others)
